Requirement of health insurance for long-stay visa
On 12 June 2017 an announcement regarding a special type of VISA from Ministry of Interior was published in The Royal Gazette. The effective date is 60 days after the publication date which is around middle August 2017. The announcement is about the new VISA type called O-X (10 years). This visa is for citizens from 14 countries including Sweden. The requirement for this visa except for the big amount of money in Thai bank account is a health insurance which needs to comprise of coverage of OPD 40,000 bath and inpatient 400,000 bath per year.
On 2 April 2019, the Department of Health Service Support has proposed another suggestion about requiring a health insurance for (long-stay) non-immigration visa code O-A (1 year) to the cabinet. This visa will require all foreign citizens from 50 year of age and over to have the health insurance. The cabinet has accepted and approved the suggestion and ordered the department together with involved parties (Ministry of Public Health, Immigration, MoI, MFA) to change their relevant rules and to work with Office of Insurance Commission to find a channel for buying the insurance for the foreigners. In the start, the channel to buy insurance will be same channel through the website as for the VISA O-X.

Foreign Insurance policy bought outside Thailand can also be used for the visa application as long as the coverage is not less than the requirement above. For those who has higher risks and cannot buy the insurance, the requirement maybe that the foreigner need to have more money in their bank account.
Department of Health Service Support confirmed the detail and informed that they will have another meeting with Immigration and MFA in 22 May but maybe postponed to beginning of June. If this can be finalised after the meeting, the new rule will be publicly announced short after.
Affected foreigners who already has Non-Immigration O-A will be before this new rule, will be allowed use their current visa and don’t need to submit the health insurance until the renewal of their visa.
