Protests by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) forced authorities to close Suvarnabhumi to all air traffic at 4 am today.

Bangkok''s Don Muang airport remains open, though it is understood there have been cancellations there too.

Of almost 5,000 passengers due to fly to Bangkok from Phuket today, only 500 will be making the journey. All will be flying into Don Muang Airport.

International flights to and from Phuket are unaffected.

All eight Air Asia flights to Suvarnabhumi Airport have been canceled, affecting 1,220 passengers.

All Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways flights to Suvarnabhumi have also been canceled, affecting over 3,000 passengers.

Some flights due to land at Suvarnabhumi have been diverted to other airports around Thailand, including Chiang Mai, Don Muang and Phuket.

Two diverted flights landed at Phuket today. The first was an LTU plane with 264 passengers that arrived from Berlin this morning. The passengers were transferred to the Phuket Merlin Hotel.

A Thai Airways flight with163 passengers arrived from Sydney later in the afternoon.

In a press conference held at PIA this morning, Airport Director Wicha Nernlop stated that buses would be arranged to transfer stranded passengers to Bangkok, if required.

Phuket Governor Preecha Ruangjan was also in attendance. Speaking about the prospect of protesters attempting to close down PIA, he stated that police officers have inspected the airport and are observing the movements of PAD protesters in Phuket.

The Phuket Tourist Association issued a statement earlier today asking its members to do their best to accommodate stranded tourists and assist them in contacting airlines and finding alternative means of transport.

Thai Airways International said on Thursday it was cancelling all flights from Munich, but would fly on Friday and Saturday from Frankfurt to Utapao, local media in Germany reported.

Passengers would be taken by bus to Bangkok.

A fully-booked Lufthansa flight was to leave on Thursday night, overfly Bangkok and land in Phuket, the airline said.\

German package-holiday companies cancelled holiday departures on Thursday for 1,200 Germans because Suvarnabhumi international airport remains occupied.

The holiday companies, which also cancelled outbound trips on Wednesday, were conferring with airlines on how to bring holidaying Germans home on schedule, with both of Bangkok's civilian airports closed.

Lufthansa, Thai Airways International and Air Berlin's LTU unit cancelled all Bangkok-bound Thursday departures.

Thailand on world travel warning list

Daily Xpres
Published on November 27, 2008

Countries around the globe yesterday issued warnings to their citizens about travelling to Thailand - a country the Philippines said was lacking in "political maturity."

The comment from President Gloria Arroyo's spokesman, Anthony Golez, was prompted by the seizure of Suvarnabhumi Airport by protesters.

Asked to explain his comments, Golez said "our people have reached a high degree of political maturity whereby [they] respect due process and the rule of law".

China, France, New Zealand, Singapore, Britain, the United States, Australia and Japan warned through their websites of possible danger to their citizens.

The US Embassy advised Americans to stay away from the airport given the potential for violence and civil disobedience.

"American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations," it said.

The airport seizure would damage investment and tourism industry, US Ambassador Eric John said yesterday.

Shutting down the airport for even one day affected a lot of visitors.

If the closure lasted for long, it would stop tourists from visiting Thailand, he said.

The US Embassy has cooperated with Thai authorities to help American visitors trapped inside the Suvarnabhumi terminal, he said.

The Chinese Embassy warned on its website that Chinese citizens planning to visit Thailand should postpone their plans; while France's foreign affairs ministry suggested that French travellers booked to fly through Bangkok make alternative arrangements.

The New Zealand foreign affairs ministry advised stranded travellers to stay with other tourists, remain close to information counters and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Similarly, Singapore said citizens without "a pressing need to travel" should postpone their trip.

Britain's Foreign Office issued an updated travel advisory telling Britons to keep abreast of a "very uncertain" political situation.

The Japanese foreign ministry urged its nationals to be cautious. In an alert posted on the ministry's website, it said people planning to visit or to stay in Thailand were advised to check flight information well beforehand.

Thailand on 'most dangerous' list for travellers

Thailand has made the list of the Top 20 Most Dangerous Places as compiled by the Telegraph newspaper of London.

The latest edition of the list puts Thailand as the seventh most-dangerous spot for travellers behind Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, South Africa, Somalia and Sudan. Thailand is said to be more dangerous than Colombia and Haiti at the moment.

It justifies the Thai spot on the list because of "major political demonstrations and a temporary state of emergency" at the two Bangkok airports.

It also cites the continuing demonstrations around Government House, the Cambodian-Thai fighting on the bordefr, and "civil unrest and frequent attacks" in the deep South.

The British "Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to these areas," the newspaper said.

ONE MILLION TOURISM EMPLOYEES FACE JOB LOSS
THANIDA TANSUBHAPOL

At least one million Thais employed in the tourism sector could lose their jobs next year due to the damage being done to the industry by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) supporters through their invasion of the two Bangkok airports.

The government has decided to spend around one billion baht to help the stranded foreign tourists in Thailand and Thais stranded overseas to fly home. Deputy Prime Minister Olarn Chaipravat, who oversees economic affairs, held a press conference at the Foreign Ministry yesterday where he said hotels, restaurants and tour agencies made up the industry hardest hit by the PAD's seizure of the Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.

Thailand, one of the world's top tourist destinations, could suffer a dramatic fall in visitors next year if the country's political crisis drags on. Mr Olarn said he expected tourist arrivals to fall to 13.5 million this year from 14.5 million last year, and to 6 million to 7 million people next year.

"Next year, foreign tourist arrivals may fall by half and about one million people may be jobless if we don't have any measures to help them," said Mr Olarn after attending an urgent meeting at the ministry to discuss ways to help the stranded here and Thais stuck overseas due to the closure of the two airports. He said the government would allocate at least one billion baht to take care of the stranded passengers in Thailand and the 50,000 Thais grounded overseas as a result of the imposition of emergency rule at the two airports.

The Tourism and Sport Ministry would pay 2,000 baht per head per day for their accommodation and meals.

Mr Olarn has arranged a meeting with owners of tourism businesses tomorrow to evaluate the situation and discuss the tourism plan for next year. Major airlines are setting up temporary check-in counters at six major locations in Bangkok: the Asia Hotel, JW Marriott Hotel, Mae Nam Hotel, Centara Grand Hotel, Imperial Queen's Park and the Bitec Convention Centre in Bang Na.

Weerasak Kohsurat, the tourism and sport minister, has apologised to the stranded visitors for the inconvenience caused and told them they would have to wait for a few more days before they could access these check-in points as the systems still need some adjustments to meet international requirements.

"I would like to urge all the Thai people to help take care of these foreign tourists, as that would be a good way of expressing our friendship in time of crisis," said Mr Weerasak.

As of yesterday, 700 flights had been cancelled, he said.
