Her Majesty the Queen made her first solo flight in a Gripen fighter jet in Surat Thani on Thursday.

Before the flight, Her Majesty received His Majesty the King at Wing 7 in Phun Phin district of the southern province at 10am. A briefing on the flight plan was then held.

The royal couple then went to the parking bay of the single-seat JAS 39 C Gripen jet, where the Queen checked the plane before taking it to Runway 22 for takeoff.

After the solo flight, His Majesty

presented
a bouquet and the Gripen Order Golden Patch to Her Majesty the Queen.

The Queen first became a pilot on May 13, 2010, when she flew a Cessna T-41D of Fleet 604 at Wing 6 in Bangkok. She has since accumulated 1,188.48 flying hours in a variety of aircraft:

  • 315.33 hours in a Cessna T-41
  • 38.35 hours in a CT-4E Airtrainer
  • 105.59 hours in a Pilatus PC-9
  • 98.40 hours in a Mooney M20M
  • 137.50 hours in a Piper PA-34 Seneca
  • 27.09 hours in a Boeing 737-400
  • 453.11 hours in a Boeing 737-800
  • 10.13 hours in a twin-seater Saab JAS 39D Gripen.
Her Majesty has been a co-pilot for His Majesty on domestic and international flights for royal duties. Their Majesties admirably landed a royal plane at Paro airport, known as one of the world’s most difficult airports for pilots, in Bhutan in April last year.

THAI AIR FORCE PLANS SECOND PHASE OF GRIPEN FIGHTER JET PURCHASE
13 October 2026

BANGKOK – The Royal Thai Air Force plans to proceed with the second phase of its Gripen fighter jet procurement project, with funding included in the fiscal 2027 budget, Air Force chief ACM Seksan Khantha said on Monday.

Speaking on 12 October, Seksan said the procurement was intended to strengthen Thailand’s defence capabilities against potential threats. He stressed that manned fighter aircraft remained necessary because critical decisions in complex situations still required human judgement, particularly when assessing life-and-death risks.

He said Air Force personnel would be trained to work with increasingly sophisticated technologies to improve the effectiveness of decision-making. Manned aircraft would therefore continue to play an essential role in the country’s combat capabilities.

Seksan said the quality and number of aircraft must be sufficient to protect Thailand’s sovereignty. The project would also need to include technology transfers, personnel training and infrastructure development to ensure the country was prepared to defend its airspace against potential threats.

He said the goal was to ensure that key areas could be protected from attack in the event of war.

The Air Force expects to receive the Gripen aircraft under the second phase of the procurement project in 2029.

Thailand braces for eight days of heavy rain, with Chonburi at risk of flooding

By Pattaya Mail October 18, 2026

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand’s Meteorological Department has issued its second warning for heavy to very heavy rain from October 18 to 25, cautioning residents about flash floods, forest runoff, landslides and strong wind gusts in affected areas.

The warning, issued on October 17, says southern and eastern Thailand will face persistent rain and isolated heavy to very heavy downpours from October 18 to 20. From October 21 to 25, rainfall is expected to increase across the lower Northeast, Central Thailand, Bangkok and surrounding provinces, the East and the upper South.

Chonburi is among the eastern provinces named in the forecast. Heavy rain is expected on October 20, with very heavy rain forecast on October 21 and 22. Chonburi and Rayong are also listed for heavy rain on October 23 and 24.

The department warned that prolonged rainfall and accumulated runoff could cause sudden flooding, flash floods and landslides, particularly near foothills, waterways and low-lying areas. Residents are advised to avoid repeatedly flooded roads and prepare for possible short-term flooding.

Seas in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea could see waves exceeding three meters in thunderstorm areas. Boat operators should navigate cautiously and avoid sailing through thunderstorms.

Residents are urged to monitor official weather updates and plan travel carefully throughout the warning period. Updates are available at the Meteorological Department website, www.tmd.go.th, or by calling 1182 and 0-2399-4012–13 around the clock.

Pattaya Faces Severe Slump: Empty Hotels and Silent Bars

October 19, 2026 8:44 am

IMG_0629.webp

BANGKOK – The Resort Tow of Pattaya is facing a severe tourism drought that threatens to destabilize Thailand’s broader economic recovery. During the recent summer months, some hotels in this famous coastal city reported occupancy rates plunging to a devastating 15 percent. This figure is alarming for a hospitality sector where a standard property needs at least 40 to 50 percent just to break even.

Visitors strolling down Beach Road recently might have noticed the eerily quiet atmosphere. Hotel pools sit empty with sunbeds neatly stacked at noon, while iconic baht buses roll down the streets with nobody in the back. Pattaya was never supposed to be a quiet city, but the bustling noise that once defined it has noticeably faded away.

This drastic slowdown in Pattaya is far more severe than the general dip seen across the rest of the nation. Through early October 2026, Thailand as a whole counted about 23.5 million foreign arrivals. That represents a drop of just under four percent compared to the previous year, which is a mild bruise for the national economy.

However, regional tourism officials report a much darker reality for the eastern seaboard. The Chonburi Tourism Federation and the local chapter of the Thai Hotels Association estimate that visitor numbers crashed by 20 to 30 percent. The old saying rings true today: when Thailand catches a cold, Pattaya gets pneumonia.

Dom får helt enkelt sitta i ”baksätet”.

Thailand approves THB58.9bn rice support and production reform plan

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2026

IMG_0634.webp

Thailand’s Cabinet has approved five rice support and production-reform schemes worth a combined THB58.91 billion, aiming to ease pressure on paddy prices as large volumes of the 2026/27 main crop enter the market in October and November.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana said on Tuesday (October 20) that the measures were proposed by the Ministry of Commerce, overseen by Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun.

The package combines measures to stabilise paddy prices with longer-term production restructuring under the “New Rice Economy” concept.

Of the total funding, THB49.28 billion will be provided through loans, while THB9.64 billion will cover government compensation and other non-repayable expenditure.
