BANGKOK: -- Police have found billions of baht worth of assets at the home of Central Investigation Bureau commander Lt-General Pongpat Chayaphan, who has been suspended from service after being charged with several crimes, including lese majeste, a police source said late yesterday.

Yesterday's search reportedly turned up cash in both Thai and US banknotes amounting to billions of baht, as well as gold bars, rare Buddha images and numerous amulets along with a large number of land title deeds.

Pongpat and six other policemen were being detained at seven metropolitan police stations as of last night, after they were all taken to Bangkok-based military barracks at around 1am yesterday for questioning.

Royal Thai Police spokesman Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri said earlier that Pongpat and the six others had confessed to their crimes. Three civilians accused of similar crimes were on the run and were being pursued by police, he said.

The cases would be clarified further and in greater detail at a press conference, said Prawut, who is also an assistant national police chief.

Senior police have rarely been charged with lese majeste.

Three civilians accused of similar crimes were on the run, he said.

As for the death of Pol Colonel Akkharawut Limrat, Prawut said a certificate issued by coroners on Friday said he suffered a broken spine at chest level, which was caused by a fall. Akkharawut, transferred from a top position along with Pongpat, had attempted suicide on three occasions after his transfer, he said.

Akkharawut was cooperative and gave useful information to police, he said.

"After giving his statements, he jumped off a building to kill himself out of distress and fear for prosecution, he said, adding that the colonel left a suicide note. Pongpat, his deputy Maj-General Kowit Wongrungroj and Akkharawut were transferred to inactive posts in an urgent transfer order late on November 11.

A police notice on Friday details their alleged crimes and lists eight more people - five police and the three civilians. Akkharawut had not been charged with any offence. His death was made known via social media posts yesterday.

Crime Suppression Division commander Chaithat Bunkham was transferred on November 13 but he was not on the notice, which comprises 10 people in total.

Another transfer order issued on November 14 resulted in a police commander being assigned to replace Colonel Watcharaphol Thongluan, commander of the CSD's Subdivision 5. Watcharaphol is also not on the notice.

Others on the list were Marine Police commander Maj-General Bunsueb Phrai-thuen, Samut Sakhon immigration chief Colonel Kowit Muangnual, Snr Sgt Major Surasak Jan-ngoa and Snr Sgt Major Chattrin Laothong.

Bra utfört jobb, ger mer i plånkan...
Lite som en sil när man bakar, det mjöl som hamnar på bordet när man siktar, är föda för andra..

Nu är det 17 gripna, en del civila ledare med.

Five more civilians have been arrested as part of a major corruption probe into a network of senior Thai police officers, authorities said Wednesday, bringing the total number of those caught up in the scandal to 17.

The investigation -- a rare move against the kingdom's top brass -- has already led to the public downfall of three senior officers who have been charged under Thailand's strict royal defamation law.

Pongpat Chayapun, the head of Thailand's elite Central Investigation Bureau, his deputy Kowit Vongrongrot and marine police chief Boonsueb Praithuen have all been accused by Thai authorities of running a corrupt patronage network that allegedly netted them a fortune.

As well as facing a slew of bribery and corruption allegations, the trio have been charged under the kingdom's lese majeste law in which anyone convicted of insulting the king, queen, heir or regent faces up to 15 years in prison on each count.

Investigators accuse the three senior officers, who have been dismissed from their posts, of making "false claims" about the monarchy in order to demand bribes.

National police spokesman Lieutenant General Prawut Thavornsiri said a further five civilians were arrested Wednesday as part of the widening probe.

"Based on our investigations we have found that there are more people making false claims about the monarchy to demand bribes, illegally detain people and extort them," he said.

None of the five people have yet been charged under Thailand's royal defamation law.

"They are under interrogation and if we find clear evidence we will add lese majeste charges later," Prawut said.

A total of seven police officers and 10 civilians have now been arrested in the probe, which analysts say is an attempt by the military junta to strengthen their hold over police. Twelve have been charged.

Generals took control of Thailand in a May coup after months of street protests.

The kingdom's police have since come under intense scrutiny with the military purging dozens of top officers seen as cosy with the elected former government of Yingluck Shinawatra, whose billionaire brother and former premier Thaksin is an ex-policeman.

The police are unpopular with Thais who bemoan routine bribe-taking.

May's coup was the latest chapter in Thailand's long-running political conflict, which broadly pits a Bangkok-based middle class and royalist elite, backed by parts of the military and judiciary, against rural and working-class voters loyal to Thaksin.

Both Thai and international media must heavily self-censor when covering the country's lese majeste rules. Even repeating details of the charges could mean breaking the law under section 112 of Thailand's criminal code.
