17.3m workers 'unable to support their retirement'

Thailand's ageing population is raising concerns over retirement security, with 17.3 million "near-retirement" workers facing a high risk of insufficient savings to support them in old age, according to the National Savings Fund (NSF).

The warning is based on data from the National Statistical Office's survey on the socio-economic conditions of households and a report by the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI).

The NSF said the number of workers aged 46-60, described as the near-retirement group, reached 17.3 million in 2024, accounting for 39% of the working- age population.

Among them, 41.6% were self-employed or owned businesses, meaning they were largely responsible for building sufficient retirement savings over the next 10-15 years.

According to the NSF, rising costs of living have widened the gap between household expenses and savings.

In 2024, this age group spent an average of 8,362 baht a month while those aged 61-70 spent about 7,603 baht. However, the government's old-age allowance starts at 600 baht per month and covers only 7.9% of the average monthly expenses.

The NSF said old people who live alone face higher living costs than those living with family members. Average monthly expenses for the former demographic reached 10,087 baht because they cannot share housing, food or transport costs with others.

It said the average monthly savings for people aged 46-60 stood at 4,416 baht, making them financially vulnerable as retirement approaches.

Based on the NSF's estimates, a person who begins saving at the average rate at age 46 would have enough money to cover their living expenses for only about 6.6 years after retirement.

Those who start at age 50 would have savings lasting about 5.1 years, while people beginning at age 55 would only have enough to survive financially for another 2.8 years.

The NSF urged self-employed workers to join the voluntary retirement savings system to ensure they have sufficient savings for old age.

An unidentified foreign man went on a violent rampage in a residential soi in eastern Bangkok on Friday afternoon, smashing shop windows and chasing residents with a knife before stabbing a police officer and being shot by responding officers.

The incident occurred around 16:30 in Soi Phatthanakan 43 in the Suan Luang subdistrict. According to reports, the man, described as tall, dark skinned, and large-built, entered a state of extreme agitation, vandalizing shop fronts by breaking glass while screaming and threatening random bystanders, and then pursuing members of the public while armed with a knife.

Officers from Khlong Tan Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the area, received the initial alert shortly after 16:15 and dispatched a patrol unit. When police attempted to intervene and calmly deescalate the situation, the suspect stabbed one officer, who was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Responding officers then tried to subdue the man with a taser, which proved ineffective. The foreign man then reportedly tried to attack Thai police again despite many warnings to stop resisting and they then opened fire with live ammunition. Thai media in the area reported that the man was hit by one round in the abdomen and two in the thighs. Some local accounts indicated a total of approximately six shots were fired before he was brought under control.

The suspect sustained serious injuries. Rescue volunteers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation provided first aid at the scene and requested an advanced life-support ambulance. Both the injured officer and the suspect were receiving medical attention as of press time.

Police have not yet publicly released the man’s identity, nationality or possible motive. The investigation is ongoing and this is a developing story.

Samui yearns for investment to address water shortage

PUBLISHED : 31 JUL 2026

1785476797448.webp

A severe drought and the peak travel season have left Koh Samui facing a water shortage that is affecting businesses, prompting tourism operators to call for greater investment in water infrastructure to keep pace with rising visitor numbers.

Ratchaporn Poolsawadee, vice-president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, said tourism in Samui this year is performing better than usual despite the Middle East conflict, as the resumption of flights has encouraged tourists to plan their trips.

Unlike the low season in the Andaman provinces, June and July are considered the island's peak season, attracting robust occupancy rates, he said.

However, Samui is facing extremely dry weather caused by the El Niño phenomenon, resulting in a prolonged drought and reducing the volume of raw water available for consumption.

Demand for water increases annually, and even during off-peak months, visitor arrivals exceed those recorded before the pandemic, said Mr Ratchaporn.

The island is estimated to require 34,000 cubic metres of water per day, but the mainland can supply only 16,000 cu m daily via pipelines.

He said the Koh Samui branch of the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) is coordinating with PWA Surat Thani to increase water supplies to the island.

The authority is also repairing the island's damaged water production plants, which use a reverse osmosis process to convert seawater into freshwater.

The water distribution plan is being adjusted to ensure supplies are distributed efficiently to residents across all zones, said Mr Ratchaporn.

In addition, deputy interior minister Jeseth Thaiseth asked the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation to carry out artificial rainmaking operations when weather conditions permit.

According to the PWA, it plans to implement a seven-day strategy to distribute water alternately across three zones from Aug 3.

The northeastern zone, comprising Choeng Mon, Mad Lang and the airport departure area, receives water on Wednesdays, while neighbouring areas such as Chaweng Noi, Yaek Bo Phut, Fisherman's Village and the airport arrival area receive water on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. The remaining areas, covering the central and western parts of the island, receive water on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The authority advised operators and residents to conserve water and store adequate supplies during the scheduled water distribution periods.

Mr Ratchaporn said some hotel operators bought groundwater from private suppliers at a cost of 150-300 baht per cu m, compared with an average of 20-30 baht per cu m for tap water. The move creates a cost burden for operators, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, many of which have chosen to absorb the additional expense to avoid affecting tourists.

He said there have been no significant booking cancellations linked to the water shortage.

"This problem is not simply a management failure, but rather the inability of infrastructure to keep pace with tourism growth," said Mr Ratchaporn.

Samui has a registered population of roughly 70,000, plus 400,000-500,000 workers and tourists during the high season, he noted.

The island has at least 600 licensed hotels with 24,000 rooms, excluding numerous homestays and pool villas.

Samui has more investment in the pipeline, including property developments, restaurants and airport expansion projects, which means the government needs to plan for long-term water security, including additional raw water storage facilities, reverse osmosis plants and underwater pipelines, in line with long-term tourism projections, said Mr Ratchaporn.

For the remainder of this year, Samui's forward bookings look robust, and visitor arrivals are expected to surpass the 4 million recorded last year, he said.

Nantha Sedtinwong (Annie) and Thanita Sedtinwong (Winnie), sixth-form students from Concord College, United Kingdom, have brought international recognition to Thailand by winning Gold Medals at The World Invention Creativity Olympics (Korea WICO 2026), held in the Republic of Korea and organised by the Korea University Intellectual Property Association.

The competition is an international platform for inventions and innovations, attracting more than 1,200 participants from 26 countries. While most entries were presented by teams of four to five members, Annie and Winnie competed individually and each earned a Gold Medal for their own research project.

Winnie presented her research entitled "Upcycling of Filter Cake to Biochar for Improving the Mechanical Properties of Cement Mortar." The project focuses on converting agricultural waste into biochar for use in cement mortar, improving its mechanical performance while adding value to agricultural by-products and promoting sustainable resource utilisation.

Hej

Thailand’s U17 women’s volleyball team, after fighting until the final match to secure a place in the last 16, produced a strong performance to beat Poland in a thrilling four-set contest and advance to the quarter-finals of the world championship.

The 2026 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship is being held in Santiago, Chile. In the last-16 round on 13 August, Thailand, who finished fourth in Group A, faced Poland, the winners of Group C.

Thailand made an excellent start, taking a 2-0 lead after winning the opening two sets 25-19 and 25-21. Poland, however, adjusted their tactics effectively and fought back to win the third set 25-10, cutting Thailand’s lead to 2-1.

The fourth set was a closely fought affair, with the teams trading points and the lead throughout. The score was level at 20-20 before Thailand edged ahead to claim a thrilling 25-23 victory.

Thailand’s U17 women therefore defeated Poland 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 10-25, 25-23) to book their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face Taiwan.

Poland, meanwhile, will drop into the 9th-16th classification round, where they will meet Venezuela.

NAKHON PHANOM — The Mekong River has overflowed its banks and flooded a Thai-Lao border trading market in Nakhon Phanom, with water levels reaching 11.98 metres on 12 August, just 2 centimetres below the critical level.

Hydrological officials recorded the river level at 06:00 on Wednesday, showing a 15-centimetre increase from the previous day. Authorities warned that the level could reach the critical threshold by the afternoon.

The Nakhon Phanom municipal authorities have ordered all four floodgates at key pumping stations to be closed to prevent the Mekong from flowing back into the city.

Runoff from Bueng Kan province and the Lao side of the river has also flooded agricultural areas along the riverbank in Ban Klang subdistrict, Muang district, about 28 kilometres from Nakhon Phanom town.

Natchaya Donpraik and Rinthida Buncloy from Wang Klai Kang Won School qualified for the international competition after winning the Thailand Junior Water Prize.

Their project, “Bio-Seed Balls to Enhance Water Absorption for Seed Germination and Survival in Watershed Reforestation,” uses materials including tapioca starch, coconut fibre, dried vetiver leaves and vermicompost.

Tests showed that the bio-seed balls absorbed more water and achieved higher germination rates than conventional seed balls. The students hope the low-cost innovation can make reforestation easier and more accessible to local communities.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize brings together 39 winners from national competitions around the world. Their projects address water-related challenges through science and innovation. The annual award ceremony is a highlight of World Water Week, and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the prize’s patron, will present the 2026 award.

The award ceremony will take place at Stockholm City Hall on 25 August. Members of the public can vote for the Thai project in the People’s Choice Award until 20 August.

När sedan notan på 32000 baht kom vägrade han betala.

Han bjöd friskt runt till alla. Till sist ville han ha damsällskap till rummet men tjejen vägrade följa med honom och då skulle han inte betala notan.
