Thailandske nyheter

Dubbel huva!

An 80-year-old Norwegian man who financially supported a Muay Thai boxing camp in Rayong and was accused of sexually abusing boys there died two days before police raided the camp and arrested its supervisor, authorities said on Thursday.

Investigators said the Norwegian, known as Kim (not his real name), had reportedly funded the camp’s operations and was later implicated in the sexual exploitation of children residing at the camp.

The man died of natural causes just two days before officers from Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD) carried out their search.

Police arrested Naruebet “Check” Nilthai, 28, supervisor of the boxing camp, on Tuesday. Social Development and Human Security officials from Rayong and Chon Buri provinces joined in the raid.

Mr Naruebet was charged with human trafficking for the purpose of exploiting minors for pr*stitution, including procuring, transporting and facilitating the pr*stitution of children aged over 15 but under 18, and operating or managing a pr*stitution business.

The arrest came after investigators received information that operators of a Muay Thai boxing camp had forced underage male boxers into pr*stitution for male clients in exchange for financial gain.

Pol Maj Gen Withaya Sriprasertparp, the ATPD commander, said on Tuesday that Mr Naruebet supervised the camp where there were about 30 Thai and foreign boxing trainees aged 18 to 35. He reportedly procured some of the young boxers for male clients.

Authorities interviewed 12 children to determine whether they had been victims of human trafficking. They gave consistent accounts that Kim, the Norwegian national, regularly financed the camp’s operations.

According to their statements, whenever the Norwegian visited the camp, a female secretary called boys to meet him in a reception room. They alleged that they were subjected to sexual abuse during those encounters.

They told investigators that Kim would pay them between 500 and 5,000 baht after each encounter and instruct them not to disclose what had occurred.

A multidisciplinary investigative team concluded that six children were victims of sexual abuse committed by Kim.

However, police subsequently learned that the Norwegian man had died from an existing medical condition two days before the camp was raided.

Pattaya teen missing after planned meeting with foreigner

A 17-year-old woman has been reported missing in Pattaya after telling friends she was due to meet an older foreigner at Central Pattaya shopping mall to watch a movie.

Nong Tong disappeared at the weekend and has not been contacted by friends or relatives since, according to her sister, Pinanong Lansettha. Her family has reported her missing to police and launched an online appeal for information.

Ms Lansettha said the family did not know the identity or nationality of the man her sister planned to meet.

"We don't know who she was meeting or where he was from," she told the Daily Mail. "I think she met him online through an app."

Family and friends appeal for information

In a social-media post, Ms Lansettha asked people to help find her younger sister, saying she had been unable to contact her for three days.

"None of her close friends or family have been able to reach her or see her," she wrote. "I'm very worried about her. Please help keep an eye out for her."

Friends said her sudden disappearance was out of character. One said Nong Tong normally spoke with her every day but was no longer online.

Another local woman said she had seen the teenager with foreigners at the Stone House pub at around the time she vanished, recalling that their tables had been beside each other.

Ms Lansettha said her sister did not work in Pattaya's bars or on the street because of her age, but worked independently and had gone to meet an older foreigner before contact was lost.

Anyone with information is being urged by the family to contact them or police.

Disappearance follows Pattaya murder charge

The case comes weeks after another 17-year-old, Tunchanok Donhomla, was found dead in a suitcase beside railway tracks in Pattaya.

Australian truck driver Simon Carman, 46, has been charged over her death and is being held at Pattaya Remand Prison. He denies murdering Ms Donhomla, saying he acted in self-defence after she allegedly pulled a knife and demanded money.

Police allege Carman met Ms Donhomla on the street, took her to his condominium, strangled her and put her body in a holdall. CCTV reportedly showed him riding a scooter the following evening with a suitcase strapped to the back.

He was arrested at Bangkok airport carrying a Jetstar boarding pass. Police allege he was attempting to flee on a flight to Perth, while Carman said he was returning to Australia to collect a replacement bank card and intended to come back to Thailand within days to "sort it all out".

Like Ms Donhomla, Nong Tong had travelled to Pattaya from a rural province seeking work. In both cases, friends raised the alarm after the teenagers stopped answering calls and messages.

pr*stitution is illegal in Thailand but remains widely tolerated in Pattaya's nightlife areas, where many women meet foreign tourists for work. The two teenagers were said to have worked independently rather than through bars, where age checks can make employment difficult for under aged.

Foreigner speaking Isan uses wife's subsidy at Kalasin shop
5 hours ago

A foreign customer speaking fluent Isan surprised staff at a Korean grilled meat shop in Kalasin after ordering two jumbo sets and asking to pay through the Thai discount scheme using his wife's mobile phone.

The moment, recorded on the shop's CCTV at 5.28pm on 14 July, was posted by the owner on Facebook and drew comments from viewers wondering how a foreigner could use the Khon La Khrueng or Thai Chuai Thai Plus benefit.

Shop owner Apinya Phunnoina later explained that the entitlement belonged to the man's wife. He used her phone to scan and pay for the order, according to the report.

Fluent Isan leaves staff laughing

The customer entered the long-established grilled meat shop on Thanon Thinnanon, on the Kalasin-Yang Talat route in Muang district, to buy food to take home.

He placed his order in Isan, the Lao-influenced dialect commonly heard across north-eastern Thailand. Apinya said she could not contain her laughter after hearing his accent.

In her Facebook caption, the owner said she was already amazed that the foreign customer could speak Isan, before he asked whether the shop accepted the half-price scheme. She described him as both handsome and able to speak Isan.

Apinya said the man asked about the available meal sets. She told him a large set cost 250 baht and a jumbo set 320 baht. He chose two jumbo sets.

He then asked whether the shop accepted Khon La Khrueng. Staff asked whose benefit he intended to use, and he replied that it belonged to his wife before producing the phone to scan the payment.

For foreign residents and visitors, eligibility for government cost-of-living schemes remains separate from simply being able to make a payment at a participating shop. Anyone hoping to use such a programme should check the official conditions and ensure the registered beneficiary is making the transaction in line with the scheme's rules.
