Ferry Sinks Off Pattaya: Tourist Passengers Taken Off Safely

By Prasit Tarnsirisin

PHUKET: A ferry boat sank in slow-motion off Pattaya yesterday, allowing authorities time to mount a rescue and pluck the 82 tourists on board to safety.

The Petchthara 7 was on its way back from the popular Koh Larn - also known as Koh Lan - where the tourists from Buriram province had spent the day on Tawaen beach.

Ferry captain Kamtan Tungtaisong, 47, noticed his vessel was going under around 3pm and managed to call other boats to assist in getting the passengers off safely, said Colonel Sakatat Pumpanmuang, of Pattaya Police Station.

Officers will investigate the cause of the sinking, the colonel said.

A severely overloaded vessel sank between Koh Larn and the mainland Pattaya Pier on November 3, 2013, with the loss of seven tourists.

The victims were a Russian boy, a Polish couple, a man from Hong Kong and three Thai passengers.

A ferry, the Ao Nang Princess 5, caught fire and sank on April 8 this year travelling between Krabi and Phuket with passengers and crew forced to jump into the sea to escape the flames.

Israeli Shani Maril, 12, was killed. Most passengers lost all their possessions and have not been compensated.

Al, still even now no compensation? Did not the owner say there would be from memory or am I wrong? How did people get home without Passports or money?

I have been reliably informed by a friend that works on the beach in Pattaya that this happens about once a month and can't understand why this has hit the news!

FF,

they will they to order their (emergency) passports on their account, have to contact their banks for emergency cash off their VISA/MasterCard and order replacement on their own account, and buy new clothes and other stuff themselves.

Yes, they have claim on operator of the boat for compensation of the equivalent of lquidated damages, that could be enforced by the Office of Consumer Protection Board on their behalf, or there is a special pricedure in courts for consumers claims, that incl, assistance in drafting the claim, or there is so well advertised Tourist Court, that presumably shoukd adjudicate such matters swiftly, or they can like a regular plaintiff to the court - all these four options either doesn't work in practice or are costly , lengthy and burdensome, so the only hope is a good will of the operator.

Laws do not oblige operators to make any handouts immediately , so the operator company can wait until court verdict in last instance will be in force.
