"Phuket and Bangkok also appeared on the list"

Thailand Immigration Bureau Launches Nationwide Offensive Against Visa Runners

Bangkok, November 13th, 2025– In a bid to safeguard Thailand's borders from exploitation, the Royal Thai Immigration Bureau has rolled out stringent nationwide protocols targeting foreigners who exploit visa-exemption schemes for illegal purposes, including unauthorized business ventures and/or working illegally and cyber fraud operations.

The crackdown, unveiled following a high-level strategy session, introduces tough vetting at entry points and ramps up oversight on extensions and overstays, with penalties including entry bans, fines, and forced repatriation. Officials stress that these steps are to preserve the kingdom's allure as a premier tourist haven while dismantling networks tied to scams, a persistent headache in Southeast Asia's bustling travel corridors.

Presiding over the pivotal gathering was Pol Lt Gen Panumas Boonyalak, the Immigration Bureau's Commissioner-General, whose directives echoed firm backing from Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittirat Panpetch. The session, joined by Deputy Commissioner-General Pol Maj Gen Cherngron Rimphidi, zeroed in on curbing the "visa run" ploy—a cycle of quick exits and re-entries that often conceals deeper criminality, such as call-center rackets preying on global victims or people working illegally without a work permit.
Echoing recent Thai media spotlights on border vulnerabilities, Pol Maj Gen Cherngron explained how such abuses erode public trust and fuel underground economies.

The change draws on intelligence from hotspots like Mae Sot in Tak Province—a notorious gateway for cross-border fraud rings along the Myanmar frontier:

Travelers attempting recent visa-free access more than twice minus a verifiable motive face outright denial at the gate or port of entry. TPN Media notes that there was no window of what "recent" is considered and Royal Thai Immigration says this is by design to stop scammers from gaming the system.. Since January 2025, enforcers have turned away roughly 2,900 suspects nationwide, with special focus given to people entering from Myanmar or Cambodia.

- Border Hotspot Lockdown: Amped-up patrols zero in on repeat offenders and blacklisted individuals, especially via the Mae Sot-Myawaddy conduit, a smuggling artery flagged in dispatches for its scam connections. Deportees from this route get a permanent re-entry red card. Immigration is also paying special attention to foreigners who travel into these border areas or list the border area on their travel information, often taking them aside for interviews to determine the purpose of their visit.

- Extension Audits and Revocations: Local Immigration offices must comb through recent visa extensions, yanking approvals for serial abusers and pursuing legal action that could culminate in permanent blacklisting. They will be looking for people with long histories of regular visa running and who are suspected of working illegally without a work permit or visa in particular.

- Overstay Sweep Intensification: A nationwide dragnet against lingerers, complete with mandatory progress reports from regional units, promises zero tolerance and faster deportations. New AI technology will also be used in tourist hotspots to find people on overstay.
Pol Maj Gen Cherngron candidly addressed potential hiccups, noting that beefed-up interrogations could nudge passport queues by up to 40 minutes during rush hours, with each check clocking in at an average of under 45 seconds. "The ripple might be felt briefly, but it's a small price for fortifying our shores. Genuine tourists have nothing to worry about. Some frequent visitors and travelers who are not connected to scams or working illegally may be advised to get different visa types versus use of visa free programs, which are intended for genuine tourists, not people living in Thailand."

Full operational guidelines and rollout timelines are slated for release on Monday, November 17, 2025, as the bureau gears up for peak-season influxes and begins a major crackdown on visa runners.
