NokAir hits bird, makes emergency landing

Nok Air Flight DD7805, travelling from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Don Mueang
with more than 200 passengers and crew on board, made an emergency landing
at Surat Thani airport on Sunday morning after hitting a large bird,
Thairath Online reported.

The aircraft departed from Nakhon Si Thammarat airport at 7.40am.
About 20 minutes after departure, the captain of the flight announced
that there was a technical problem because the plane had hit a bird.
For safety reasons, the captain said he would make an emergency landing
at Surat Thani airport so that the aircraft could be inspected by a
Nok Air technical team from Bangkok.

After landing safely at Surat Thani, the passengers were moved to the
airport's passenger lounge.The safety inspection was expected to take
two to three hours after the team arrived from Bangkok.

Foreign suspect stays mum : Prawut

The foreign man arrested on Saturday on suspicion of involvement in
the Aug 17 bombings has refused to answer interrogators' questions
on whether he played any role in them, police spokesman
Prawut Thawornsiri said on Sunday.

Pol Lt Gen Prawut said deputy police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chinda
and his staff had gone to the 11th Infantry Regiment headquarters
where the man is being detained after being arrested in an apartment
in the Nong Chok area to question him.

The man would not comment on being involved in the Erawan Shrine and
Sathorn pier bombings. His real name and nationality have not been
established. Initially it was thought he was a Turk named
Adem Karadag, 28, but his passport is believed to be fake, he said.

Interpreters of English and other languages are available to help in
the interrogation.
Pol Lt Gen Prawut said it was believed many other people, some of whom
were likely to Thai nationals, were involved in the crime.
Authorities had conducted a DNA test of the suspect and collected his
belongings including clothes and shoes for further examination.

Bomb suspect held

A FOREIGN man holding a Turkish passport was arrested yesterday in Bangkok's
eastern suburbs in connection with the Erawan Shrine bomb attack.

A joint force of police and military officers made the arrest at Poon Anand
Apartments in Nong Chok district.
A search of his rented apartment found a large quantity of materials used
for making explosives, including ball bearings the same size as those used
in the bomb at Erawan Shrine on August 17 and another bomb that went off
near Sathorn Pier without causing casualties the following day.

Also found in the suspect's room were fuses, short steel pipes with caps
on both sides, and clothes with traces of explosive substances. A thorough
search and examination of the suspect's rented apartments continued until
last night, a television report said.

"We believe that the suspect was involved with the bombing" at the shrine,
Royal Thai Police spokesman Lt-General Prawut Thavornsiri said on a live
televised broadcast last evening. He also said the suspect "looks like the
one we are looking for".

Prawut said clothes and bomb-making material found in the detained man's
room were linked to the shrine attack as well as the blast at Sathorn Pier.
"The ball bearing is the same size" as those found at the two blast sites.
About 100 police and military officers - including at least a dozen bomb
disposal specialists - gathered outside the apartment block where the man
was arrested in possession of bomb-making equipment and multiple passports.
Police and military personnel cordoned off the four-storey budget
apartment from scores of media and onlookers, and the arrested man could
not be seen.

The blast at the city shrine was the worst ever. It killed 20 people dead
injured more than 100 others.The suspect, aged 28, holds a Turkish passport
under the name Adem Karadag. According to the passport, he is from Istanbul.
However, Prawut said the passport was fake.
The man was accompanied out of his apartment under heavy escort by troops
and police, as many people gathered in the area after hearing about the
arrest.
The suspect was detained for questioning at an unspecified military camp.

PM orders aid for 21 rain-hit provinces

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department to prepare assistance
for residents in 21 northern and northeastern provinces where heavy
rains and landslides were expected between today and September 3.

The provinces included: Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Nakhon Phanom, Loei
and Udon Thani.
Government Spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday Prayut had
emphasised that those in disaster-prone areas must be warned in
advance and strictly follow government instructions so as to reduce
risk of losses. The Department's offices in the 21 provinces were to
proceed with flood-prevention measures, he said.

his home. Briscoe denied the charges and did not talk to police.
Investigators said more charges could be brought if Briscoe's husband
was found to have been involved in the incidents.

Seven die when pickup skids into loaded truck

ROI ET — Seven people were killed when their pickup truck collided
head on with a loaded trailer truck in Suwannaphum district on
Monday morning. The accident occurred at the entry to a bridge over the.

Police said five men and two women died in the accident, all travelling
on a Si Sa Ket-registered Izusu pickup. Two of the victims were thrown
from the vehicle. The only body identified was the driver.
Narongdej Deesoon, 25, the truck driver, was waiting at the accident
scene when police arrived.

He told police he was delivering rocks to a construction materials
store in Roi Et. He was crossing the bridge when a speeding pickup failed
to negotiate the curve near the bridge, then skidded off the.
The impact was so powerful that the middle of the pickup was crumpled
and wedged sideways up against the truck. Rescue workers had to use cutting
tools to remove the bodies from the wreckage.

Mr Narong said he could not avoid the oncoming pickup because of the
bridge railing. After the crash his truck dragged the wrecked Isuzu
15 metres along the road before coming to a halt.
Mr Narongdej initially faces a charge reckless driving causing death.
Police, however, said they would question witnesses and further examine the
evidence at the scene before deciding whether to pursue.

Grand Hyatt Erawan reworks business strategy after blast

GRAND HYATT Erawan Bangkok has revised its marketing strategies to reclaim lost business after the deadly bomb blast at a famous shrine located next to the hotel two weeks ago.

Gordon Fuller, area vice president of Hyatt Hotels and Resorts and general manager of Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, said the hotel would focus more on wholesale markets, particularly from Hong Kong and Singapore, for the rest of this year. Meanwhile, it will attract independent travellers from other core markets including Middle East, the United States, and the emerging mainland China market.
The hotel is also in talks with the Ratchaprasong Square Trade Association, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau on how to bring tourists and business travellers back into the area.

It is also coordinating its plans with other hotels in the Ratchaprasong area.
"My hotel received heavy booking cancellations during the first 24 hours after the bomb. One of the big events scheduled for [the day after] the blast was cancelled, and that is a substantial number of cancellations. But this will be a short-term impact," Fuller said.

He added that total cancellations as of last Friday were about 1,000 room-nights. It was hoped that some would rebook their rooms.
The hotel's occupancy rate is expected to drop by 20 per cent this month, while the rate for the entire year is expected to fall from the initial projection of 85 per cent to 80 per cent.

Bangkok - Thai police will reward the investigative team that helped find the Bangkok bombing suspect with a cash bounty that had been offered to the public.

The Bt3 million (US$84,000 dollars) offered for information leading to the capture of any bombing suspects would be given to the police team, Police Chief Somyot Poompanmouang told reporters on Monday.
He said that it was the diligence and hard work of the police that led to the capture of the suspect on Saturday. It is unclear whether the landlady who owned the apartment where the suspect was captured and phoned in her suspicions will receive any money.

Army Chief Udomdej Sitabutr told reporters on Monday that the suspect had revealed to army interrogators the name of three accomplices. Udomdej said the suspect in custody was interrogated in a "gentle andcautious way.
"The army had earlier said they would not reveal the nationality of the suspect because the government did not want to damage international relations. Police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri said that the expanded investigation has led to several searches of properties in Bangkok.

One search found bomb making material at an apartment not far from where the first suspect was captured. Among the seized material was black powder, fertilizer, fuses, timersand a remote control car. Prawut also showed pictures of two new suspects that had been renting the property, an unidentified Asian man and a Thai woman shownwearing a hijab. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of both. Bangkok taxi users spared fare increase

Taxi passengers should be happy after Transport Minister Akom Termpitayapaisit Thursday put the brakes on another fare increase in Bangkok.
Akom said lower fuel prices meant a fare hike was unnecessary, while the price of natural gas for vehicles was also stable.
The minister spoke after presiding over the opening ceremony of an "All Thai Taxi" event.
He said the government would receive the outcome of a passenger-satisfaction assessment in October.
"There is an important problem that needs to be resolved urgently - taxis refusing passengers," he said.
Previously, the ministry approved a fare increase of 8 per cent.

The current flagfall is Bt35.

The newly restored statue is covered by gold leaf weighted 2.5 kilogrammes.
This afternoon many worshippers continue to offer prayers to the statue even after it is finished.

Damaged by the bomb on August 17, the likeness of the Hindu god Brahma suffered damage to the chin, necklace, right index finger and right chin, and the roof was also affected. Thao Maha Prom Foundation is covering the costs of the restoration, estimated at Bt70,000.

Social media users have demanded police hunt down and prosecute the 'Siamese gangster' who was caught on camera bullying and assaulting people in public.
One of the incidents happened inside a subway car in Bangkok on Sept 4, when the middle-aged man punched a woman in the eye and kicked her, after they bumped into each other as they entered the carriage.

Pantip.com user 1714812, who was the woman's friend, wrote that the man told her friend that she stepped on his foot and refused to apologise.
The second incident took place at Siam Paragon on Aug 12. The "gangster" was recorded bullying two teenagers just because they looked at him.

According to Facebook user Ratjai Bundidslip, the man hit her son in the head with a water bottle because her son and his girlfriend were talking about his shirt and looking at him.
The man told the teenagers that they should not mess with him as he was the owner of a gambling den in Pratunam.

The victims in both incidents informed police and security personnel at the shopping mall, but no action has yet been taken.

Deadline set for first-time car buyers to take delivery

The cabinet has set Sept 30 as the deadline for first-time car buyers taking advantage of the previous government’s tax rebate to take delivery of their vehicles.
Deputy Finance Minister Wisut Srisuphan said the cabinet resolved on Tuesday that the end of this month will bring the tax scheme to a close. "It's time to end the project,'' he said.

The programme was launched by former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sept 16, 2011 and ran through Dec 31, 2012. But the Finance Ministry extended the delivery period for applicants after automakers...
Almost 1.3 million buyers booked their first car under the scheme, but about 111,465 applicants still have not sent additional information required to complete the purchase as they likely changed their...

Thailand staged a remarkable fightback to snatch a 2-2 home draw with 2007 Asian Cup winners Iraq, which kept them at the top of World Cup qualifying Group F.
The visitors looked to have taken home valuable three points from the clash that pitted the top two sides in the section against each other as they were 2-0 up with ten minutes remaining at the packed Rajamangala National stadium.

However, the hosts refused to cave in, with captain Theerathon Bunmathan starting the comeback by converting an 80th-minute penalty. Mongkol Tossakrai then arrived at the far post three minutes later to bundle home a cross to salvage a potentially crucial point in a race for the top spot and automatic qualification for the Asian final qualifying round.

A LARGE meteor dazzled in the daytime sky over Bangkok and nearby provinces yesterday morning before dramatically exploding.

The Thai Astronomical Society confirmed that it was a rare phenomenon called "bolide" or exploding meteor. Scores of people from Chon Buri to Kanchanaburi and as far north as Phitsanulok witnessed the spectacle, with many posting videos of the occurrence online.

Social media users speculated that the meteor might have been part of a satellite, a crippled aircraft or even a UFO.
"Extremely bright flashes of light, followed by a thunderous roar a minute later above Kanchanaburi sky. What is it?" Nuthatai Chotechuang wrote on Twitter with an accompanying photo taken immediately after the explosion.

Some people thought the explosion was the result of a crash.
Thai Astronomical Society president Prapee Wiraporn said: "The bolide this morning [yesterday] was extraordinary because it was very bright and clearly visible during the daytime. This is a natural, normal phenomenon because the small meteors fall to the earth every day but what we saw was similar to the one over Chelyabinsk, Russia, two years ago."

She said there was only a small chance anything of the meteor was left to fall to earth.
Saran Poshyachinda, deputy director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand, concurred with Prapee.

Saran said the meteor could be seen over an extensive area because it exploded high in the sky.
Kanchanaburi Governor Wan-chai Osukhonthip said the explosion of meteor was heard and witnessed in three of the province's districts: Thong Pha Phum, Sai Yok and Si Sawat. He ordered police and Sai Yok National Park rangers to search Tambon Wang Krachae and Bongti in Sai Yok district to see if they could locate the object.

Wanchai said it was too early to pinpoint where it might have fallen but it was unlikely to have been a plane because there was no missing plane report.
In relation to people speculating that it might have been a plane, he said: "I would like to ask the people to listen to the official report and do not spread rumours."
