Monsoon storms causes immense erosion of Na Jomtien Beach

Ryan TurnerPublished: 17:46, 12 June 2024

Severe monsoon storms and heavy rains have led to significant erosion along Na Jomtien Beach, causing safety concerns for beachgoers and tourists. Authorities from the Pattaya Harbor Office and Na Jomtien Municipality inspected the affected area and are moving quickly to address the situation.

The Director of the Pattaya Harbor Office, Ekkarach Kantharo, explained that the erosion is a natural result of the strong winds and waves typical of Thailand’s monsoon season.

The affected area along Na Jomtien Beach spans 2.8 kilometres and is directly connected to the sea, making it particularly vulnerable to the influx of rain during this period.

he Harbour Department confirms that the erosion from the intense monsoon has caused an immense loss of sand to the 1-kilometre section of the beach that was already previously reinforced by the department.

In addition, a 400-metre section has been eroded by over 1.5 metres, creating a steep slope that poses a safety risk, particularly at night.

To mitigate these hazards, a joint effort between the Pattaya Harbor Department and Na Jomtien Municipality is using heavy machinery to refill the eroded sections with sand. They will also reclaim sand washed into the sea to level the steep slope. Warning signs will be placed along the affected shoreline to advise the public to avoid the area.

Ekkarach also mentioned that the Pattaya Harbor Department is considering long-term solutions, such as planting trees along the shoreline. These trees would not only help reduce erosion but also stabilise the sand and prevent it from being blown onto nearby streets.

Jomtien Beach Gets a Major Upgrade! New parking, enhanced walkways, and flood prevention systems.

PATTAYA, Thailand – In a significant step toward improving the infrastructure and tourism facilities, Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet visited Jomtien Beach to oversee the progress of the ongoing landscape improvement project. The project is designed to address several long-standing issues, enhance the area’s appeal, and accommodate the growing number of tourists flocking to the beach every year.

The major upgrades include the expansion of parking spaces, with the capacity increasing from just 300 spots to an estimated 700 to 800 spaces, providing much-needed relief to the overcrowded parking situation. Additionally, the project aims to alleviate flooding problems by introducing a new and larger drainage system. The system will consist of expansive underground pipes and substantial water retention basins to manage heavy rains and prevent waterlogging.

Jomtien Gets a Major Makeover – More parking, wider footpaths, and a massive drainage system

Jomtien’s Bold Makeover: Parking expanded, footpaths widened, and new drainage underway.

PATTAYA, Thailand – Pattaya City is pushing ahead with its bold “Neo Pattaya” vision, with Mayor Poramet Ngampichet or ‘Mayor Beer’ closely inspecting the latest progress on the Jomtien Beachfront Landscape Improvement Project. Aiming to create a more organized and tourist-friendly environment, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Among the key upgrades is a major expansion of public parking—boosting capacity from just over 300 spaces to between 700 and 800. The sidewalks are also being redesigned for smoother pedestrian access, while additional street lighting will be installed to improve nighttime safety.

One of the most ambitious aspects of the project is the installation of a new large-scale drainage system. Giant drainage pipes measuring 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter are being laid along the beachfront to channel stormwater into the sea near D Varee Jomtien Beach Hotel. A major water catchment pit—8 meters wide, 8 meters long, and 7 meters deep—is currently under construction near the SCB Bank section of the beach. This will serve as a holding point to collect water before it is discharged into the ocean.

However, while the city touts the project as a big win for public infrastructure, residents are divided in their opinions. Some praise the improvements, saying they are long overdue—especially the additional parking, which has long been a problem during events. Others express concerns about narrow sidewalks in some sections, illegal parking, one-way traffic flow, and the discharge of untreated wastewater directly into the sea.

Locals welcome progress—but worry about narrow paths, wastewater, and coordination.

Jomtien upgrade targets completion by end of 2025 with bigger drains and safer streets.
