53-årig man från Thailand död i mjältbrand​

En thailändsk man har dött i mjältbrand. Det är det första dödsfallet i landet på över 30 år, rapporterar AFP. Mannen tros ha smittats av en död ko i närheten av Laos. Ytterligare ett fall har bekräftats i landet.

Landets hälsodepartement har manat befolkningen att hålla sig lugn, men varnar för att äta rått kött. Mjältbrand sprids via bakterier i jorden och drabbar oftast boskap. Det är sällsynt att infektionssjukdomen överförs till människor.

En thailändsk man har avlidit i mjältbrand. Det är landets första dödsfall i den fruktade infektionssjukdomen på flera decennier.
Den avlidne 53-åringen tros ha smittats av en död ko i provinsen Mukdahan nära Laos. Kort efter dödsfallet bekräftades ytterligare en person smittad.

Myndigheter avråder nu thailändare från att äta rått kött. Fler än 630 personer som bedöms tillhöra ”riskgrupper” övervakas och ges förbyggande antibiotika. Över 1 200 idisslare ska vaccineras.

Mjältbrand – som sprids vid bakterier i jorden – drabbar oftast boskap men kan i sällsynta fall överföras till människor och leda till svår lunginflammation, blodförgiftning och döden.

Senast 1994 rapporterade Thailand ett dödsfall till följd av mjältbrand. I grannlandet Laos avled en person i sjukdomen i fjol.

Mjältbrand​

Mjältbrand, eller anthrax, är en allvarlig infektionssjukdom som framför allt förekommer hos däggdjur. Gräsätare är särskilt utsatta, men även människor kan drabbas.

Bakterierna kan orsaka blodförgiftning och symtomen uppstår ofta redan två dygn efter smittotillfället.

Senast en människa insjuknade i mjältbrand i Sverige var 1965.

Mjältbrand är ett av de smittämnen som anses möjligt att använda vid terrorhandlingar. 2001 dog flera människor i USA efter att någon spritt mjältbrandssporer via post.

Second anthrax case reported in Mukdahan province

A second man, in Don Tarn district of the north-eastern Thai province of Mukdahan, has contracted anthrax and is now undergoing treatment, while two other suspected cases are waiting until tomorrow for their test results.
Dr. Narong Chankaew, the provincial health chief, said today that the second case is a 53-year-old man, who has a history of slaughtering cattle and eating the uncooked meat with first victim.

The man has developed rashes on his body and a wound on his right hand, but his condition is not serious because he does not have any relevant comorbidities, said the doctor, adding that the man is being treated at the Mukdahan Hospital, which may take about two weeks.

He also said that there are 638 people in the district who were reported to have eaten raw meat and to have been involved in the slaughtering of livestock.

They have been prescribed the broad spectrum antibiotic Doxycycline, which they are required to take for about a week. They have been told not to eat meat during this period and to report to the hospital immediately if they develop abnormalities.

Mukdahan doctor commended for rapid anthrax diagnosis

A doctor at Don Tarn Hospital in Mukdahan province has been honoured for his swift diagnosis of a man who presented with unusual symptoms, which were later confirmed to be those of an anthrax infection.

In a statement, the Mukdahan Public Health Office said that Dr Nonchaya Jaitrong, a general practitioner, acted quickly in assessing the patient, who had injuries on his hands.

“The lab tests and his prompt diagnosis led to the identification of the anthrax infection and a timely alert about the discovery. This helped to prevent potentially greater harm and limited the spread of the disease,” the statement read.

Dr. Nonchaya is a graduate of Khon Kaen University.

The diagnosis and subsequent death of the patient from an Anthrax infection prompted a mass vaccination of cattle and goats in Don Tarn district, along with an order to halt the slaughtering of any cattle for three weeks.
