Heavy rain in Chiang Mai has prompted safety warnings and temporary waterfall closures at Doi Inthanon and Doi Suthep-Pui national parks.

Rainfall of 200 millimetres was recorded near the summit of Doi Inthanon in Chom Thong district, causing unusually strong flows at Mae Ya and Pha Dok Siew waterfalls. Doi Inthanon National Park has warned visitors to take care and temporarily avoid water-based tourism activities.

Meanwhile, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park has temporarily closed Mok Fa Waterfall in Mae Taeng district and Huay Tung Tao Waterfall in Mae Rim district after heavy rain upstream sent fast-flowing, reddish-brown water into the sites.

The closures will remain in place until conditions return to normal. Authorities urged visitors to follow officials’ instructions, warning that continued rain could trigger sudden flash flooding.

Ever wondered exactly why so many bags got stuck at Suvarnabhumi this week and only happen with Thai Airways? A ground staffer has shed light on an angle many hadn't considered.
After passengers' luggage piled up and Thai Airways flights were delayed on the night of 28 September due to a shortage of staff to move the bags, a Suvarnabhumi ground worker spoke to Kapook about what was really going on.
The reason, according to the worker: many of the airport's ground-handling staff live in the Ramkhamhaeng area, one of the parts of Bangkok worst hit by flooding. With their own homes still underwater, many simply couldn't get to work, and those who did make it in were working almost non-stop.
There's also been online speculation about why Thai Airways alone seemed to be struggling. Some suggested that because THAI's ground staff are also contracted to load baggage for other airlines, when they're short-handed they have to prioritise those other carriers first, due to the high penalties for delays, leaving their own flights without enough people. However, that remains unconfirmed and would need to be clarified by the airline.
The Royal Thai Air Force has since stepped in with 69 personnel to help clear the backlog.

Heavy rain with strong winds and hail hits several Bangkok areas

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 01, 2026

Heavy rain hit several parts of Bangkok at 4pm on Thursday (October 1, 2026), while strong winds and large amounts of hail alarmed residents in some locations.

Reporters identified Lat Phrao, Chatuchak, Lak Si, Ratchadaphisek and Mo Chit as areas affected by the rain, with hail reported in Ratchada, Lat Phrao and Chok Chai 4.

Road users were warned of poor visibility and slippery roads.

People in areas at risk were also advised to beware of strong gusts and hail striking buildings or vehicles.

The Bangkok Flood Control Center reported light to moderate rain at 5pm in Thawi Watthana, Taling Chan, Bang Phlat, Chatuchak, Lak Si, Chom Thong, Phra Khanong, Bang Na, Prawet, Bang Kho Laem and Bang Khun Thian districts.

Rain bands were moving north-west with a steady trend, while accumulated rainfall in Taling Chan stood at 91.5mm.

An earlier radar report from the Thai Meteorological Department at 4.35pm showed moderate to heavy rain over Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon. Most rain bands were moving west and showing an increasing trend.

The Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology offered the following safety advice:

  • Shelter indoors. Close doors and windows securely to limit exposure to hail and strong winds.
  • Keep away from glass. Avoid areas near doors, glass windows, glass roofs and skylights, as hail could shatter glass and cause injuries.
  • Avoid rooftops and balconies. Move indoors because these areas are directly exposed to hail and storm winds.
  • Stay away from unstable structures outdoors. Buildings or structures could collapse onto people during a storm.
  • Beware of lightning. Avoid objects that conduct electricity and umbrellas with metal components when outdoors.
  • Avoid using electrical appliances during thunderstorms. Lightning could damage equipment and endanger users.
  • Request assistance or report incidents. Call the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation’s safety hotline on 1784 or contact the department through LINE at @1784DDPM.
People in Bangkok and surrounding provinces can check weather conditions, rainfall, standing water and traffic through these channels:

  • The Bangkok Flood Control Center’s Facebook page.
  • Nong Chok radar station.
  • Nong Khaem radar station.
  • Rainfall forecasts for the next three hours.
  • Live traffic images from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras throughout Bangkok.
  • Standing water updates from the Department of Drainage and Sewerage.
The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Bangkok and surrounding provinces indicates:

  • Thunderstorms covering 20–30% of the area from October 1–4, with southerly winds of 10–20 km/h.
  • Thunderstorms covering 60–70% of the area on October 5–6, with heavy rain and strong gusts in some locations.
  • Thunderstorms covering 40–60% of the area on October 7, with easterly winds of 10–20 km/h.
  • Minimum temperatures are forecast at 25–27°C and maximum temperatures at 33–36°C.

BANGKOK: The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued its second advisory at 5am on Friday (Oct 2), warning that unsettled weather will bring thunderstorms, strong gusts and isolated heavy to very heavy rain to parts of Thailand from Oct 4–7.

The conditions could trigger flash floods and run-off, particularly on foothill slopes near waterways and in low-lying areas, where accumulated rainfall could also cause flooding.
