NAKHON RATCHASIMA - A wild bull elephant killed a tourist exercising near his tent at a campground in Khao Yai National Park on Monday morning.
A park ranger said the elephant was in rut and had previously killed two local residents.
The attack occurred at the campground of the
Kho Yor 4 (Khlong Pla Kang) national park conservation unit in tambon Wang Mee of Wang Nam Khieo district about 5.30am.
The ill-fated camper was identified as Jirathachai Jiraphatboonyathorn from Muang district of Lop Buri.
Witnesses said the 69-year-old man was working out, walking near his tent about an hour before sunrise and he encountered Phlai Oiwan, a wild male elephant feeding outside his forest boundary.
The elephant rushed at the man, grabbed him with his trunk, slammed him to the ground and stomped on him. He was killed instantly, about 20 metres from his tent.
Other campers watched in horror. No one dared to leave their tent to help, fearing for their own safety.
Khao Yai rangers and local police rushed to the scene and scared the elephant away.
A doctor and rescue workers examined the victim, who had bled through his mouth and nose and suffered broken limbs and multiple other injuries.
