Thailand’s Department of National Parks (DNP) is preparing legal actionagainst a man suspected of shooting a wild elephant known as “Plai Biang Lek” (also called “Wong Thong”) in Khao Yai National Park. Wildlife officials believe the suspect may be related to a local politician.

Previously on June 19, around 5pm, wildlife rangers and volunteers were pushing a wild elephant herd away from farmland in Ban Nong Makrut, Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima, when they encountered a landowner who fired multiple shotgun rounds, both into the air and into the ground, to scare the elephants away.

One of the volunteers captured photos of the incident and collected spent shotgun shells. The next day, the same team examined the elephant and found two wounds near its rear, raising concerns that it may have been hit by stray bullets.

Attapol Charoenchansa, director-general of the DNP, said yesterday, June 23, that the park’s veterinary team is still examining whether the wounds were caused by gunfire. If confirmed, legal proceedings will be initiated against the suspect under Thailand’s Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act.

Officials have already gathered key evidence, including photographs of the suspect holding a shotgun and spent cartridges from the scene. The suspect is reportedly related to the head of a local subdistrict administrative organisation (OrBorTor).

Authorities have urged the public to avoid pushing or harming wild elephants, warning that such actions are both dangerous and illegal, reported KhaoSod.

The DNP also reminded the public that compensation measures are in place for those who suffer crop or property damage from protected wildlife. These policies aim to reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote peaceful coexistence.

A group of five wild elephants, including a mother and calf, from Thap Lan National Park, invaded a worker’s home late at night, causing significant damage as they searched for food.

The incident, which marks the sixth consecutive day the elephants have roamed outside the park, occurred yesterday, July 10, in Prachin Buri province.

The elephants, part of a herd that has been leaving the Thap Lan forest, targeted the worker’s accommodation in the middle of an eucalyptus plantation. The wooden house, built for workers, suffered extensive damage with two walls destroyed.

The elephants rummaged through the refrigerator and pantry, damaging two 200-litre plastic barrels, a 1,000-litre container, a medium-sized dragon jar, a rice cooker, and breaking a pot of fermented fish.

Samai Jaidee, a rubber plantation guard who witnessed the event, described hearing loud noises and elephants trumpeting around 1am while preparing to tap rubber. Upon investigating with a flashlight, he found a large mother elephant ransacking the worker’s home.

Despite his attempts to deter the elephants by shouting, more elephants joined, bringing the total to five, and continued the destruction. Eventually, the herd retreated into the forest after more shouts.

An official inspects the carcass of a wild elephant, around 15 years old, found dead in a Kaeng Krachan orchard, suspected to have been electrocuted.

A wild elephant was found dead yesterday, possibly electrocuted, in a fruit orchard in Kaeng Krachan district of Phetchaburi.

A team of officials and veterinarians from the Kaeng Krachan National Park rushed to the orchard in Pa Teng sub-district after being alerted to the death of a bull elephant by Boonlue Mungmee, headman of the sub-district.

The orchard’s owner, 73-year-old Prayoon Kong-yu, told the officials that he went to the orchard at about 8am yesterday to spray the fruit trees with pesticide, found the dead elephant and immediately notified the sub-district chief.

The vets found traces of burning on one leg of the elephant, which was entangled in wire fencing. They suspect that the animal, weighing about three tonnes and aged about 15 years, was killed by a high-voltage electric shock transmitted through the wires.

The vets removed some of the animal’s organs for testing in their lab, to determine the exact cause of the death.

A park official said that the killing of an elephant, which is a protected species, is an offence subject to imprisonment of up to 10 years and/or a fine of one million baht on conviction.

Wild elephant found dead in Kanchanabur

A female wild elephant was found dead with multiple suspected gunshot wounds near the border of Khao Laem and Thong Pha Phum national parks in Kanchanaburi province, western Thailand.

Today, November 24, Dome Chansuwan, head of Khao Laem National Park, reported that rangers had received a tip-off from a local, identified only as Chon, who discovered the elephant’s body in a plantation in Pilok Kee village, Moo 4, Thong Pha Phum district.

National park officers from Thong Pha Phum National Park arrived at the site and confirmed the location, which lies within the Khao Chang Phueak Forest Reserve. The area is situated along the boundary between Khao Laem and Thong Pha Phum national parks.

The elephant, a female of unknown age, was found dead with approximately 20 wounds believed to have been caused by gunshots.

Officials have called in a veterinary team from the Protected Area Regional Office 3 (Ban Pong), forensic police from Kanchanaburi, and investigating officers to conduct an autopsy and determine the exact cause of death.

In the meantime, DailyNews reported that officers from both national parks have sealed off the area and are guarding the scene until the forensics and investigation teams arrive. Additional personnel have also been dispatched to search the surrounding area for any related evidence.
